What are The Scaleups Sessions, why did we create this new series of events, and what could you get out of it?
In November 2014, serial entrepreneur and prominent angel investor Sherry Coutu CBE presented her seminal independent report to the government highlighting the necessity to focus a greater degree of support on early-stage businesses with the potential to scale.
The Scale-up Report was the culmination of a wider movement to support high-growth companies and to address some of the key challenges they face in seeking to become larger national and international businesses.
“Competitive advantage doesn’t go to the nations that focus on creating companies, it goes to nations that focus on scaling companies.”
Sherry Coutu CBE
We too have recognised this need and having created Startups.co.uk, the UK’s largest independent content resource for people looking to start and establish new businesses 15 years ago, The Scaleups Sessions events for ambitious early-stage companies aspiring to scale seemed the natural next step.
The Scaleups Sessions
Joining an events portfolio that includes the Startups Awards, the Startups 100, and Young Guns, we already have pedigree in the area of identifying, celebrating, and supporting some of the UK’s most exciting and innovative businesses.
There are a multitude of reasons why growth companies do not scale to their full potential. The idea behind The Scaleups Sessions is to address, through focused panel discussions and inspiring keynote speeches, the major hurdles Coutu’s Scale-up Report identified, namely:
* Identifying and recruiting top talent with the requisite skills.
* Evolving as a leader capable of steering the company through the travails of growth.
* Generating, reaching, and closing deals with new customers here and overseas.
* Securing the right flavour and level of finance to supplement growth through cashflow.
* Designing and building the infrastructure to support a larger business.
Through our brands Startups.co.uk and Growing Business we have been dedicated since 2000 to delivering high-quality content with genuine substance.
We have a track record of creating and hosting events featuring high-profile and relevant speakers and are driven to get the best level of detail possible to provide real insight for attendees. The Scaleups Sessions will be no different.
Why we created The Scaleups Sessions
While not exclusively the preserve of technology start-ups, we – like everyone – have recognised in the past few years the rise of a new generation of entrepreneurs, particularly those running digital businesses, intent on achieving fast-growth and emulating some of the success stories of the past decade.
These exciting clusters that exist in London’s Tech City and beyond contain a vital ingredient to the UK’s future economic prosperity.
As the chancellor George Osborne said in 2012: “We want nothing less than to make the UK the technology centre of Europe. This is the path we need to take to create new jobs, new growth and new prosperity in every corner of our country.”
By focusing now on scale-up companies, says Sherry Coutu CBE, the impact on job growth, taxes, wealth, and the UK’s competitive advantage will be felt for generations. She highlighted that a boost of just 1% to the UK’s scale-up population would create an additional 238,000 jobs and £38bn to GVA within three years. The gains could be even more radical and far-reaching if the skills gap and scale-up gap is addressed.
We plan to make The Scaleups Sessions part of the agenda to achieve those goals.
